KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Government is removing the duty exemptions for 18 grades of steel imports with effect from Feb 1, 2013 as it revamps the domestic iron and steel industry.

Minister of International Trade and Industry (MITI) Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed said on Tuesday the restructuring of the steel industry was a matter of "national importance".

He said both the industry and the government were assuming "shared responsibility" for its future and would jointly undertake initiatives to further enhance the industry.

Mustapa said the government's approach would be to focus on the enforcement of mandatory standards to prevent below-par products from entering the market.
